Heywood Academies offers in-person tutoring across Greater Victoria for high school, college, and university students. Our tutors travel to you, whether that means your kitchen table, a library branch, or a quiet coffee shop. We cover math, science, and engineering.

How it works
How in-person tutoring works.
Your tutor comes to you. There is no centre to drive to and no fixed classroom, which means a session can fit around dinner, practice, or a shift at work. Everything written during the session stays with the student.

Tell us the course and where you are
Fill out the form and let us know the course, the grade or year, and which community you are in. We match you with a tutor who knows that specific course and can reach you.

Pick a spot that suits the student
Most families meet at home. Others prefer a Greater Victoria Public Library branch or a coffee shop, which suits students who focus better away from the house. Your tutor is happy with any of them.

Work through problems side by side
Sessions run 50 minutes. Your tutor works through problems on paper next to the student, catches the misunderstanding as it happens, and leaves the written work behind to study from.

We tutor in person in these communities. Each page lists the schools we work with locally and the spots our tutors tend to meet students.
Outside those seven, or on the Island somewhere we do not reach, online tutoring covers anywhere in British Columbia.
High school tutoring
In-person tutoring for high school students.
We tutor BC high school students in math, physics, chemistry, biology, and science, and we cover the AP and IB curricula alongside the BC one. Sitting next to a student tends to suit those who get stuck partway through a problem and go quiet rather than asking.
College & university tutoring
In-person tutoring for post-secondary students.
Our tutors studied at Camosun College and the University of Victoria, so they have taken many of these courses themselves. We meet students on or near both campuses as well as at home.
Which to choose
In person or online?
Both work. The honest answer is that the choice depends more on the student than on the subject.
In person tends to suit younger students, students who lose focus without someone beside them, and anyone who goes quiet instead of asking when they get stuck. A tutor sitting next to a student notices the pause before the student says anything.
Online tends to suit older and more independent students, families juggling tight schedules, and anyone outside our in-person area. It also costs less per session and produces a PDF of the notes every time.
If you are not sure, say so on the form. We will suggest one based on the student rather than guessing, and switching later is easy.
Rates
How much does in-person tutoring cost?
- $95 per 50-minute in-person session
- Prepaid 8 sessions: $720, a $40 saving
Prepaid hours never expire and can be used any time. Refundable, less a $35 administration fee.
Pricing is the same across all seven communities, with no travel surcharge. Online sessions are $70, or $520 for a prepaid package of eight.

Questions about in-person tutoring.
Where do in-person sessions take place?
Wherever suits the student. Most sessions happen at home. Others take place at a branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library or at a coffee shop. Your tutor travels to you, so there is no centre to drive to.
Which communities do you cover in person?
Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal, Colwood, and Langford. Anywhere else in British Columbia, including Nanaimo and Vancouver, we cover with online tutoring.
How much does in-person tutoring cost?
$95 per 50-minute session, or $720 for a prepaid package of eight, saving $40. Pricing is the same in all seven communities and there is no travel surcharge.
Is in-person tutoring better than online?
Neither is better across the board. In person tends to suit younger students and anyone who goes quiet rather than asking when they get stuck. Online tends to suit independent students and busy schedules, and it costs less. Tell us about the student on the form and we will recommend one.
Can we switch between in-person and online sessions?
Yes. Plenty of families book in person during term and switch to online over exam season or holidays. Just let us know and we will adjust the rate for those sessions.
Are your tutors screened to work with children?
Yes. Every Heywood Academies tutor holds a current criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening, completed through the police service where they live. We also carry commercial liability insurance. For in-person sessions with a student under 19 we normally ask that a parent or guardian is home, or that you meet somewhere public like a library branch, though we are happy to work around what suits your household.
Do you tutor adults as well as school students?
Yes. A good share of our in-person work is with Camosun College and University of Victoria students, including mature students returning to study.
