"It was pleasant working with Matt. We worked on specific problems I was struggling with. Overall, it was a great experience and I highly recommend it to any student who needs help."
Tutoring for students with ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities.
A large share of the students we work with have ADHD, are on the autism spectrum, or have a learning disability like dyslexia. This is not a small part of what we do. It's most of it.
50-minute sessions. $70 online, $95 in person.
This is where most of our experience actually is.
We looked at who our longest-standing students actually are. Almost all of them have ADHD, are on the autism spectrum, or have a learning disability such as dyslexia. That was not the plan when Heywood Academies started. It's just where the demand turned out to be, and where our tutors have built up the most real experience.
We are not a clinical service. We do not diagnose, and we are not psychologists, occupational therapists, or certified special education teachers. What we are is a group of tutors who have spent a lot of hours with students who learn differently, and who have adjusted how we teach because of it.
How this changes a session.
Every student is different, and a diagnosis does not tell us much on its own. What experience has taught us is to adjust the things a standard tutoring session usually assumes: pace, structure, and how instructions are given.
Some students need a concept broken into smaller pieces than we'd normally use. Some need more repetition before something sticks, and are fine with that as long as it's not treated as a setback. Some do better with a very consistent session structure, session to session, and get thrown off by a tutor who improvises the order. Some need written instructions alongside spoken ones, not instead of them.
The same tutor works with the same student session after session, specifically so that these adjustments happen once and then hold, rather than getting re-explained to somebody new every time.
Tutoring by grade and subject.
The subject matter is the same as everywhere else on our site. Pick a level to see what's covered.
The same pricing as every other session.
We don't charge more for this. $70 per 50-minute online session, $95 in person, the same rates as the rest of the site.
Questions parents ask us.
Do you have experience with ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities specifically?
Yes, more than with any other single group of students. Looking at who we've worked with longest, almost all of them fall into one of these categories.
Are your tutors certified in special education?
No. We are subject tutors, not certified special education teachers, and we are not a clinical or diagnostic service. What we bring is experience: a lot of hours with students who learn differently, and tutors who have adjusted their approach because of it.
Can you help implement my child's IEP?
We're not the ones who write or administer an IEP, but tell us what's in it and we will work within it, things like extra processing time, breaking instructions into smaller steps, or a consistent session structure are all things we already do.
Will my child have the same tutor every time?
Yes. We match one tutor to one student and keep that pairing session to session, which matters more here than almost anywhere else on our site. Adjustments that work for a specific student only hold if the same tutor is the one making them.
Do you charge more for this?
No. Same rates as everywhere else on our site: $70 per 50-minute online session, $95 in person.

What students say.
"Been looking for a tutor and this just feels right. Not only tutors but resources that keep you going, too! As an engineering student, they are very helpful. Totally worth it!!"
"My daughter is in first year engineering and was struggling with matrix algebra. On her behalf, I contacted Heywood Academies. Matt got back to me right away and set my daughter up with an excellent, friendly tutor and her marks have improved significantly. Thanks to Heywood Academies, both my and my daughter’s stress levels have come down."
"Super easy to communicate and schedule with, and the tutoring really helped with the final push through Physics 11."
"I started tutoring with Matt because I was struggling with my first year Physics and Calculus courses at UVic. I had tried a couple of other tutors before Matt, but Matt was by far the most patient and intelligent. He ended up getting me through all of my Calculus levels and Matrix Algebra. I cannot recommend him enough."
