"It was pleasant working with Matt. We worked on specific problems I was struggling with. Overall, it was a great experience and I highly recommend it to any student who needs help."
Online tutoring, anywhere in BC.
Heywood Academies offers online tutoring for high school and university students anywhere in British Columbia. Our tutors are based in Victoria but work with students across BC, including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan, and Northern BC.

How online tutoring works.
Sessions run through Zoom. Our tutors use tablets so they can write out problems by hand and share their screen in real time, which makes online tutoring feel close to working in person. At the end of every session, students get a PDF of the notes covered.
Book a time that works for you
Sessions are scheduled through our booking system, including evenings and weekends. No special software is needed beyond Zoom.
Work through problems one on one
Your tutor writes out problems on a digital whiteboard, walks through them with you, and answers questions as they come up, just like sitting next to someone at a table.
Keep the notes for later
Everything written during the session is saved as a PDF and sent to you afterwards, so you can refer back to it whenever you're studying.
Online tutoring for high school students in BC.
We tutor BC high school students in math, physics, chemistry, and biology. Our tutors know the BC curriculum well and work with students from schools across the province, whether you're in Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, Prince George, or anywhere else in BC.
Online tutoring works particularly well for high school students who want a tutor outside their immediate area, who have busy schedules with after-school activities, or who prefer working from home.
Online tutoring for university and college students.
We also offer online tutoring for post-secondary students. Our tutors work with students at the University of Victoria (UVic) in math, calculus, physics, and engineering, at Camosun College in math, physics, and engineering, and at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in math, calculus, and physics.
If you're at another BC institution and need help with a course in our subject areas, reach out and we'll let you know if we can help.
Why online tutoring works as well as in person.
A lot of parents and students worry that online tutoring is less effective than in person. In our experience, it isn't, as long as the session is set up properly.
What matters is the tutor's ability to write out problems clearly and walk through them step by step. Our tutors use tablets and a digital whiteboard for this, which often gives students a clearer view of the work than they'd get sitting next to someone at a table.
The PDF notes after each session are an advantage online tutoring has over in person. Students can go back through exactly what was covered, in the order it was covered, whenever they want.
Anywhere in BC, including Nanaimo and Vancouver.
Online tutoring covers anywhere in British Columbia. In-person tutoring covers seven communities around Greater Victoria, so online is the way to connect with our tutors from everywhere else in the province.

Frequently asked questions.
Do you offer online tutoring across BC?
Yes. Our tutors are based in Victoria but work with students anywhere in British Columbia, including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan, the Kootenays, and Northern BC.
What software do I need for online tutoring?
Just Zoom. Your tutor handles everything else through a digital whiteboard. You'll need a device with a webcam and microphone, and a reliable internet connection.
Is online tutoring as effective as in person?
For most students, yes. The digital whiteboard our tutors use often makes the work clearer than working side by side at a table, and the PDF of session notes is a real advantage. Some students prefer one over the other, but the learning outcomes are similar. See in-person tutoring if you would rather meet face to face.
Do you tutor students at UVic, Camosun, or UBC?
Yes. We work with post-secondary students at all three institutions in math, calculus, physics, and engineering courses. If you're at another BC school, get in touch and we'll let you know if we can help.
What subjects do you tutor online for high school students?
Math (Foundations of Math, Pre-Calculus, Apprenticeship and Workplace Math), Physics 11 and 12, Chemistry 11 and 12, and Biology 11 and 12.
How much does online tutoring cost?
$70 per 50-minute session, or $520 for a prepaid package of eight, saving $40. Prepaid hours never expire and are refundable, less a $35 administration fee. In-person sessions are $95, or $720 for a package of eight.

What students say.
"Been looking for a tutor and this just feels right. Not only tutors but resources that keep you going, too! As an engineering student, they are very helpful. Totally worth it!!"
"My daughter is in first year engineering and was struggling with matrix algebra. On her behalf, I contacted Heywood Academies. Matt got back to me right away and set my daughter up with an excellent, friendly tutor and her marks have improved significantly. Thanks to Heywood Academies, both my and my daughter’s stress levels have come down."
"Super easy to communicate and schedule with, and the tutoring really helped with the final push through Physics 11."
"I started tutoring with Matt because I was struggling with my first year Physics and Calculus courses at UVic. I had tried a couple of other tutors before Matt, but Matt was by far the most patient and intelligent. He ended up getting me through all of my Calculus levels and Matrix Algebra. I cannot recommend him enough."
