Open Learning codes are not the Kamloops codes.

This trips people up constantly. Calculus 1 on the Kamloops campus is MATH 1140. The same course through Open Learning is MATH 1141. Calculus 2 is MATH 1240 on campus and MATH 1241 online. Introduction to Statistics is STAT 1200 on campus and STAT 1201 online.

The pattern holds across the catalogue: the Open Learning version ends in a different digit. When you are searching for notes, past exams, or a tutor, the code on your registration is the one that matters, because the syllabus and the assessment are not identical.

If you are not sure which you are enrolled in, check the course code on your TRU registration rather than the course name. We will match the tutoring to whichever one it actually is.

Thirty weeks of freedom is the trap.

Open Learning courses have flexible start dates, no scheduled classes, and up to 30 weeks to finish. That flexibility is the reason people choose them, and it is also the reason a lot of them stall.

There is no Tuesday lecture reminding you the course exists. Nothing goes wrong in week three. It goes wrong in week nineteen, when you realise you have eleven weeks left, four units untouched, and no idea how long a unit actually takes you.

Weekly sessions fix that more or less by accident. A standing appointment turns an open-ended course back into something with a rhythm, and it gives you a deadline that is not the final one. Most of the students we work through Open Learning with book weekly for exactly that reason, not because the material is beyond them.

Failing it once does not mean you need to start over.

The most common story we hear: a first-year calculus or statistics course went badly at UVic or somewhere else, and Open Learning is the way to clear the prerequisite without waiting a full year for the course to run again.

What usually helps is being honest about where it broke the first time. It is rarely the whole course. It is more often one earlier idea that never got fixed, with everything after it stacked on top. We would rather spend the first session finding that than starting again at chapter one.
