Langford's New John Horgan Campus: What It Means for Students (and Where We Now Tutor)

This week we set up a booth at Campus Connect, an event held at the brand-new John Horgan Campus in downtown Langford. If you haven't been inside yet, it's worth knowing what's actually there, because it's not just one more building. It's a $106-million, five-storey campus shared by five different institutions, and it changes a few things for students and families on the West Shore, including how we tutor here.

What Is the John Horgan Campus?

The campus opened on September 2, 2025, at 798 Goldstream Ave, right in Goldstream Village. It's named after the late BC premier John Horgan, who represented Langford for years and was known locally as "John from Langford."

What makes it unusual is that it isn't run by one school. It's a first-of-its-kind collaboration between five institutions under one roof: the University of Victoria, Camosun College, Royal Roads University, the Justice Institute of BC, and the Sooke School District (SD62). At full capacity it's expected to serve around 1,300 students, with flexible classrooms, study spaces, specialized labs, an Indigenous centre for gathering and cultural connection, and a West Shore innovation hub called REV for local entrepreneurship.

For a city that's grown as fast as Langford has, that's a real shift. University and college classes used to mean a drive into Victoria. Now a chunk of that coursework is available a few minutes from home.

What's Actually Offered There

Each institution brought something different to the building:

University of Victoria: UVic runs a range of Division of Continuing Studies courses at the campus, and this September marked the launch of the Elementary Post-Degree Professional Program, a 16-month program that prepares graduates to teach kindergarten through grade 7 and apply for a BC Teaching Certificate. A Computing Gateway program, covering the first two years of coursework toward Computer Science, Data Science, or Software Engineering, is expected to launch in fall 2026.

Camosun College: Camosun offers hands-on programs including Information and Computer Systems Technologist and Health Care Assistant, alongside University Transfer classes and Adult Upgrading courses, which is what Camosun had already been running on the West Shore before this building existed.

Royal Roads University: Royal Roads offers upper-level classes toward bachelor's degrees in programs like tourism and hospitality management, business, and environmental science, plus certificate options, all designed as flexible, stackable pathways rather than a fixed four-year track.

Justice Institute of BC and SD62: JIBC delivers justice and public safety education, and the Sooke School District runs adult education programs including Fast Forward to Grad, an accelerated path to an Adult Dogwood Diploma, along with secondary upgrading and English as an Additional Language classes.

Good News If You're in UVic's New Elementary Teacher Program

This one's worth calling out specifically. UVic's Elementary Post-Degree Professional Program includes math content and math methods coursework, the same kind of material we already tutor university and college students through, including calculus and math for future teachers. If you're in this program's first cohort at the John Horgan Campus and the math side of it is feeling shakier than you expected, that's exactly the kind of gap we help close.

We Can Now Tutor You Right There

Before this campus existed, there wasn't really a good place to run an in-person tutoring session in Langford. We used to meet students at the Starbucks nearby, which works, but it's not exactly quiet or private.

Now there's an actual option. The first floor has open tables and seating, room enough for a tutor and a student to sit down and work through a problem set without competing with espresso machine noise. On the top floor there's a library and study centre with computers and a genuinely quiet space to work, open to the public, not just students enrolled at the campus.

So if in-home tutoring isn't the right fit for your family, whether you're a high school student or in one of the post-secondary programs above, we can now meet you at the John Horgan Campus instead. It's a real upgrade for anyone on the West Shore.

We Were at Campus Connect

We had a booth set up at Campus Connect to meet students and families and talk about what we do. Alongside the usual pamphlets, we brought a prize wheel: spin it and you'd land on a free tutoring session, a sticker, a lollipop, or some candy, plus a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in tutoring for us down the road.

It was a fairly quiet day overall. Around 25 booths from different local businesses and organizations were set up, but the student turnout was lighter than expected. If anything, that meant more time to actually talk with the families who did stop by, which is honestly the version of these events we prefer anyway.
