Your kid did fine in Math 8 and Math 9. Now the Pre-Calculus 11 marks are sliding, there is a provincial numeracy assessment on the horizon, and you are staring at two options: a learning centre like Mathnasium, or a private math tutor in Victoria. Both cost money. Both promise results. It is hard to tell which one actually fits your student.
The honest answer is that it depends on the student. We tutor math and science across Greater Victoria and online across BC, and plenty of our students come to us after trying a learning centre. So here is the straight breakdown on how to tell which option is right for your kid.
How a learning centre actually works
Learning centres are a legitimate, well-run option, and they help a lot of kids. Mathnasium is the best-known example, with centres in Victoria and Langford. Here is the model in plain terms. Many centres focus on math, from around kindergarten through high school. A student starts with a diagnostic assessment, then gets a learning plan built from the centre’s own curriculum. They come in two or three times a week and work through worksheets while an instructor circulates. The ratio is often around one instructor to four students, so your student gets attention in bursts rather than the whole session. There is a real strength here: the method is built to close foundational gaps and build number sense, and the routine plus the small rewards keep younger kids coming back.
The trade-off is that the work follows the centre’s curriculum, not your student’s actual course. That is fine when the goal is shoring up fundamentals. It is less useful when the goal is next Thursday’s Pre-Calculus 11 test.
How one-on-one private tutoring is different
In a one-on-one session, the tutor works from your student’s real material. Their textbook, their teacher’s notes, the exact assignment that is due, the practice provincial exam their school handed out. There is no rotating attention. The full hour is spent on the specific thing that is tripping your student up, and the tutor can change direction mid-session when something clicks or something breaks. Private tutors also tend to cover the sciences, chemistry, biology, and physics, which a math-focused centre does not touch.
That focus is the whole point of private tutoring, and it is why it tends to move faster on course-specific problems.
When a learning centre is the better fit
We would rather you pick the right tool than pick us. A learning centre is often the stronger choice when:
- Younger students. Your student is in elementary or early middle school and needs to rebuild number sense and confidence.
- Foundational gaps. The problem is things like fractions, place value, and times tables, rather than one specific high school course.
- Kids who like routine. Your student thrives on structure, a steady schedule, and a bit of friendly gamification.
- A set drop-in rhythm. You want steady, ongoing practice a few times a week.
If that sounds like your student, a learning centre can be a genuinely good investment.
When to choose a private math tutor in Victoria
Private tutoring tends to be the stronger fit in these cases:
- BC-specific courses. Pre-Calculus 11 and 12, Calculus 12, Foundations of Math, and provincial numeracy and exam prep all follow the BC curriculum. A tutor who knows that curriculum can prep the exact content your student will be tested on, which a centre’s set curriculum does not map to.
- Post-secondary students. Most learning centres serve K-12. If your student is at UVic or Camosun and needs help with first-year calculus, statistics, or linear algebra, a private tutor is really the only one of these two options that applies.
- Students who need to move at their own pace on real deadlines. When there is a test in five days, the session needs to be about that test, not the next worksheet in a set sequence.
- Science, not just math. Chemistry, biology, and physics are outside a math-focused centre’s scope.
