You are just getting familiar with the words on the page. That feeling of “yeah, I know this” is one of the biggest traps in science, and it falls apart the moment you hit a question that asks you to apply an idea instead of repeat it.

Why rereading your notes does not work
BC science exams, especially the provincial-style ones, are built around application. They rarely ask “what is the definition of X.” They ask you to use X to explain a situation you have never seen before.
Rereading builds recognition, not understanding. You recognize the material when you see it, so you feel ready. Then the exam shows you a graph, a scenario, or a calculation, and recognition does nothing for you. The fix is to study in a way that forces you to produce the information, not just look at it.

Step 1: Start early and make a study plan
The students who do best almost always plan ahead. Not a fancy colour-coded timetable, just a simple map of what to cover and when.
Aim to begin a week or two out, not the night before. List every unit or topic on the exam and rank each one honestly: solid, shaky, or lost. Then spend most of your time on shaky and lost, not on the stuff you already know because it feels good to review.
Even 20 minutes of planning saves you hours of unfocused studying later.
Step 2: Space it out
Do not try to cover everything in one long session. You remember science far better when you revisit a topic three times over a week than when you stare at it for three hours straight.
Go back over older topics every few days, not just the new stuff. Reviewing something more than once, with a gap in between, is what moves it into long-term memory. Spacing also doubles as a test: if you can still explain a concept two days later, it has actually stuck. If you cannot, you know where to put your time next.
Step 3: Keep each session short and focused
Long marathons feel productive but your focus fades fast, and studying past that point barely counts.
A good rhythm is 25 to 50 minutes of real work, then a 5 to 10 minute break. Step away during the break instead of scrolling at your desk. Short focused blocks with real rest between them beat one long slog every time.
Step 4: Use active recall, and explain it a different way
Here is the single habit that changes results the most. When you go through your notes, do not just read them. Cover the page and try to recall the idea from memory. Then say it out loud in your own words, and try to explain it a different way than the textbook did.
If you can teach it to someone else, a friend, a parent, a study group, or your tutor, you understand it. If you get stuck halfway through explaining photosynthesis or Newton’s second law, you just found exactly what to study next. That stumble is useful information, not a failure.
This is why “teach it to someone” beats “highlight it.” Highlighting feels productive but keeps you passive. Explaining forces you to pull the idea out of your own head, which is the same thing the exam asks you to do.
Try this: after each topic, draw a concept map from memory with your notes closed. Then open them and fix what you missed.
Step 5: Do as many practice questions as you can
Once you can explain the ideas, prove it. Science is a doing subject, and there is no shortcut around volume here.
The more questions you work through, the more question types you have already seen, so fewer things surprise you on exam day. Work through past provincial exams and old unit tests first, since they are the closest thing to the real thing. The B.C. Ministry of Education graduation assessment page also has official sample questions and practice materials. When those run out, move on to textbook end-of-chapter problems, your old quizzes, and any question banks your teacher shared.
One rule: do the question before you check the answer key. Getting one wrong and figuring out why is worth more than five you breezed through. Pay attention to how each question is worded too, because BC exams reuse the same phrasing and command terms year after year.
Step 6: Practice under real exam conditions
Knowing the material and performing on exam day are two different skills. Close the gap before the exam, not during it.
For your last few sessions, set a timer, put your notes away, and do a full set of problems at exam pace. Then check your answers and review every mistake. Timed practice is how you find out whether you actually know the material or just know it slowly.
What a good 2-hour science session looks like

- 40 minutes: Practice questions or a past-paper set on what you just studied.
- 20 minutes: Check your answers and write down every mistake to review tomorrow.
That last step is the one most students skip, and it is the most valuable. Your mistake list becomes your study plan for the next session.
