Can AI Replace a Math Tutor?

Screenshot a math problem, paste it into ChatGPT, and most of the time you'll get the right answer back in seconds, for free. So the question we hear more than almost any other now is a fair one: why pay for a tutor when that exists?
The honest answer is that AI is genuinely good at some of this, and genuinely bad at other parts of it, and the split isn't random. Here's where it actually stands, tested against real assignments rather than the pitch either side would give you.
Where it's actually good: clean, text-based problems
For a straightforward equation, or a word problem with no diagram attached, AI gets it right most of the time. It's fast, it's free, and for that narrow case the accuracy is genuinely solid.
There's one specific way this is legitimately useful: checking your own work. If your assignment gives you a final numeric answer to aim for, run the problem through AI separately and see if it lands on the same number. Agreement between your work, the answer key, and an independent solve is a real signal you did it right. That's a fine use of the tool, and it costs you nothing.
Where it falls apart: diagrams, especially in 3D
The moment a problem depends on a picture rather than just text, accuracy drops off fast. AI is noticeably worse at reading diagrams than at reading equations, and it gets worse again once that diagram is three-dimensional.
We see this constantly in two specific places. High school students working through 3D geometry problems get it wrong more often than not. University students in multivariable calculus, where half the battle is correctly visualizing a surface or a solid region in three dimensions, run into the same wall. AI will confidently describe a shape or a region that isn't actually what's drawn, and unless you already know what the diagram shows, you have no way to catch that it got it wrong.
This isn't a minor gap. It lines up with what researchers are finding independently: a 2026 analysis of 3.2 million student interactions on the ALEKS math platform found that after ChatGPT became widely available, accuracy dropped hard on problems students could copy-paste as text, while performance on graphing problems, the ones you actually have to look at and interpret, didn't decline at all. The gap we see with diagrams and the gap researchers see with graphs are the same gap: AI is a text tool pretending to be a visual one.
Getting the right answer isn't the same as learning it
Even where AI's accuracy is good, that solves a different problem than the one you're actually trying to solve. An assignment is practice for a test. If the tool does the practicing for you, the test is where that catches up with you.
This is not a guess. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in April 2026, run on nearly 1,000 high school math students, found that students given unrestricted access to a ChatGPT-style tool scored 48% higher on practice problems than students working alone. Then, on an independent exam with the tool taken away, that same group scored 17% lower than the students who never had access to it in the first place. The practice looked better. The actual learning was worse.
The same study tested a second version of the tool, one built with guardrails that pushed hints and questions rather than full solutions. Those students matched the 48% group on practice, and lost none of it on the independent exam. The difference wasn't whether AI was involved. It was whether the AI was set up to make the student think, or set up to think for them.
The part a plain chatbot skips: figuring out what you actually don't know
When we tutor a student, a lot of the actual work happens before we solve anything. We ask questions, watch where they hesitate, and figure out specifically which piece is missing, not just that the final answer was wrong. Then we solve around that gap.
A chatbot doesn't do that. Paste in a problem and it hands you the complete solution in one pass, start to finish, with no back-and-forth to find out which step you'd have gotten stuck on yourself. You don't get asked what you already tried, or where your own attempt went sideways. You just get the answer, which means you never find out what you actually needed to know.
It doesn't know how your class solves things
Most math problems have more than one valid method. Your class teaches you one of them, on purpose, so the whole room is working from the same toolkit and nobody is confused by a classmate's different approach.
AI has no idea that agreement exists. It pulls from everywhere, so it will hand you a solution using a technique or notation your teacher has never mentioned, correctly solved but built out of tools you don't have yet. A tutor or a teacher can glance at that and translate it instantly, because they already know the material well enough to see past the unfamiliar method to the idea underneath. A student seeing it for the first time usually can't. It doesn't feel like a shortcut. It feels like a different subject.
What's actually changed since I started tutoring
I started Heywood Academies in 2022, before any of this existed. Back then, a session usually meant a student showing up with a practice problem they were stuck on, and us solving it together. That was most of the job: being the person who could work through the problem.
That's shifted. Getting an answer isn't the hard part anymore, a student can get one on their phone before I've finished reading the question. What's gotten harder is something else entirely: sitting down and actually doing the work when a correct-looking answer is one paste away.
That's not a knock on students. It's a genuinely hard thing to ask of anyone, kid or adult. If a shortcut is sitting right there, taking the long way on purpose takes real discipline, and discipline isn't something most of us have an unlimited supply of. That's exactly where a weekly session earns its keep. Knowing someone is going to sit down with you Tuesday at 4pm and expects to see actual attempted work, not just final answers, is often what gets a problem set opened at all.
So the honest version of what we do now is different from what it was in 2022. We're less often the person solving the hardest problem in the set, and more often the reason the set gets attempted in the first place. Both matter. Right now, the second one is the harder problem to solve on your own.
So, does it replace a tutor?
For checking a final numeric answer, it's a fine, free tool. For anything involving a diagram, especially in 3D, verify what it tells you rather than trusting it. And for actually learning the material, the evidence points the same way our own experience does: getting handed a full solution and understanding it well enough to reproduce it cold on a test day are two different skills, and only one of them gets built by watching AI do the work.
But the honest answer isn't only about accuracy. Even where AI is fully correct, it doesn't solve the harder problem, which is sitting down and doing the work in the first place when a shortcut is always sitting right there. That's the part a tutor is for now.
