Camosun College Academic Support: Every Resource You're Already Paying For

It usually starts around week five. A Camosun student is holding on in Math 100 or Chem 121. The pace picks up, and one missed concept quietly turns into three. By the time they look for help, they assume it means paying a tutor. They forget an instructor or a free campus resource is right there. Here is what most of them miss: Camosun College academic support already comes with their tuition. A lot of it sits mostly empty.

Most tutoring advice online skips Camosun students. Almost all of it targets UVic. So here is a plain guide to Camosun. What you can use, where to find it, and how to book it. Plus where a private tutor fits once you have tried the free options.

Start with the free option: the Academic Help Centres

The Academic Help Centres are the backbone of Camosun's support system. They are free for any Camosun student at any level. They offer one-on-one tutoring, writing help, and learning skills support. You can book in person or online at both the Lansdowne and Interurban campuses.

One thing worth knowing: the tutors are not other students. Their job title is Instructional Assistant, or IA. Every IA has a Bachelor's degree and years of teaching or tutoring experience. Many also have teaching credentials or a Master's. That matters because it changes what you can ask for. These are not casual homework buddies. You can bring a genuinely confusing concept and expect a real explanation.

A few ground rules that trip students up:

• They will not teach you a whole missed lesson. If you skipped class, get the notes from your instructor first, then bring specific questions.
• They will not do graded assignments for you. But they can talk through concepts and practice problems. They can also review work your instructor has already marked, so you see where it went wrong.
• If you are at Lansdowne but the centre you need is at Interurban, you can still use it. Students can use services at both campuses.

Find the right Math or Science Help Centre

Camosun splits its math help across five Math Help Centres. This is where students waste the most time. Each centre matches a specific course level, so walking into the wrong one is a common mistake. There is a Trades Math Help Centre at Interurban. Foundations and college-prep math have their own centres, the Academic Upgrading and Access Math Help Centres. Other centres carry students right up through calculus and statistics. Not sure which one covers your course? Check the Help Centres FAQ, or ask any centre and they will point you to the right room.

Science help works a little differently. The Science Help Centre covers biology, chemistry, and physics. It runs on a drop-in, first-come basis, and usually opens in mid-September for the fall term. There are no appointments. If someone is ahead of you, it is worth staying to listen. A lot of the value is in the questions other students ask.

There is also an English Help Centre, plus a dedicated centre for English Language Development students. Both help multilingual and international students, and they do more than check grammar.

Beyond tutoring: writing, learning skills, and the pieces students forget

Academic support at Camosun is broader than subject tutoring:

• Writing Centre. Book online for one-on-one help with essays, reports, and presentations. Tutors offer live appointments and written feedback, and upgrading and ELD students can use it too.
• Learning skills support. Help with time management, study strategy, and exam preparation. Most students never think to use this one, and it is often the thing they actually need.
• Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL). If you have a documented disability, CAL provides accommodations, assistive technology, and converts course materials into accessible formats.
• The Library. More than a study space. Librarians can help with research and finding sources, which saves hours on any paper.

A quick note on the student society, since students often ask. The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) is independent from the college. It runs UPass, Health and Dental coverage, the foodbank, clubs, and advocacy. None of that is tutoring. But a working transit pass and steady meals affect whether you pass a course more than people admit. The college also runs Peer Pods, a peer-led program focused on connection and settling in. It is worth knowing about if you are new and feeling isolated.

Smaller classes than UVic, but they do not do the work for you

Here is the honest comparison. Camosun's average class size is around 24 students. First-year math and science lectures at UVic can run into the hundreds. That difference is real. It means Camosun instructors are far more reachable. You can get known, ask questions in class, and drop by office hours without fighting a lecture hall.

But smaller classes are an opportunity, not a guarantee. Plenty of students in small classes still fall behind. Access to help only matters if you use it. Drop-in centres can have waits during midterms. The centre you need might sit on the other campus on your only free day. And some students just do not want to ask, in a full classroom, about the thing confusing them most.

That is the gap private tutoring fills. It is not a replacement for Camosun's free support. It is for what the free support does not cover. That means consistent weekly time with the same person, or targeted exam prep on a deadline. It also means one-on-one help in a course like Calculus or Statistics, where one shaky foundation keeps causing problems. Use the free centres first. Then bring us whatever they did not solve.
