BC vs. Alberta Curriculum: A Math and Science Guide for Families Switching Provinces

Your family moves from Calgary to Victoria over the summer. Your teen starts Grade 11 in September. Within two weeks, they are asking why their old “Math 20-1” friends back home are doing work they already covered, while a whole unit here looks brand new. Or the reverse. A student heads to Alberta for university and hits a chemistry topic everyone else saw in Grade 12. It never came up in their BC class. These moments are the real-world side of the BC vs Alberta curriculum differences in math and science.

We tutor students across Greater Victoria and online across BC, so we see these transitions all the time. Most of the BC vs Alberta curriculum confusion comes down to four things. BC splits the math pathways in its own way. The two provinces number and sequence science differently. BC’s competency-based approach feels different day to day. And a few topics quietly slip through the cracks.

By the end, you will know where a transferring student is likely ahead and where they are likely behind. You will also know what to check before you assume a course “counts.”

The math pathway split is the biggest surprise

In BC, Grade 10 gives students two doors: Workplace Mathematics 10, or Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10. In Grades 11 and 12, that second door splits again into two separate streams:

  • Pre-Calculus 11 and 12 is the theory-heavy path for students aiming at science, engineering, commerce, or math at university.
  • Foundations of Math 11 and 12 is for students in programs that do not require calculus. Think many arts, humanities, and social science degrees. It leans into statistics, finance, logic, and probability instead.

Alberta does almost the same thing with different labels. Their “dash 1” courses (Math 20-1, 30-1) line up closely with BC’s Pre-Calculus stream. Their “dash 2” courses (Math 20-2, 30-2) line up roughly with Foundations. Alberta also offers Math 31, which is basically their version of BC’s optional Calculus 12.

Here is where transferring students get caught. The two systems cover similar ground, but not in the same order. A student can arrive mid-stream and find one unit is review while the next is brand new. The most common mistake we see is simple. A family assumes Foundations and Pre-Calculus are just “easier” and “harder” versions of one course. They are not. They are different courses with different topics, and switching between them late is hard because the material diverges. If university science or engineering is even a maybe, choose Pre-Calculus in BC. Most of those programs want Pre-Calculus 12 (Alberta’s Math 30-1) as a prerequisite.

Science is numbered differently, and that trips people up

BC labels its sciences by grade: Chemistry 11, Chemistry 12, Physics 11, Physics 12, Biology 12, Anatomy and Physiology 12, and so on. Alberta uses a 20/30 system. Chemistry 20 and Physics 20 are the Grade 11 courses. Chemistry 30, Physics 30, and Biology 30 are the Grade 12 courses.

Roughly speaking, the courses line up. Alberta Chemistry 20 matches BC Chemistry 11, and Chemistry 30 matches Chemistry 12. Physics 30 matches Physics 12. Biology 30 matches BC’s Anatomy and Physiology 12, which BC used to call Biology 12. The maps are close but not identical. The order topics appear inside each course can also differ. A mid-year transfer is the one most likely to hit a gap. One province might teach a concept in October that the other saves for February.

The practical takeaway: when you move, do not just match the course title. Ask for the unit sequence and compare where each class actually is right now. Both provinces publish their full curriculum online for free. You can line up the two side by side. The official links are at the bottom of this post. Competency-based (BC) vs. outcomes-based (Alberta): why it feels different

This is the difference that surprises parents more than the course content. BC redesigned its curriculum around Big Ideas, Curricular Competencies, and Content. It leans hard on core competencies like communication, critical thinking, and self-assessment. Alberta organizes its curriculum more traditionally, around a detailed list of specific learning outcomes.

In plain terms: BC often asks students to explain their reasoning and justify an approach. It wants reflection, not just the right number. Alberta students often arrive very strong on procedure and computation. Then a BC assessment asks them to explain why a method works, and that part feels foreign. BC students moving the other way often find Alberta’s tighter outcomes reassuring. They just have to sharpen their raw procedural speed.

Neither approach is better. But knowing which one your student is used to explains a lot. It shows where their early marks come from, and what to practice first.

The gaps that show up at UVic and Camosun

This comparison matters beyond a single report card. It matters for post-secondary. Some topics get solid coverage in one province’s high school. Then they show up in BC university and college courses, where instructors assume everyone already knows them.

A few patterns we watch for with students heading into first year at UVic or Camosun:

  • Calculus readiness. BC’s Calculus 12 is optional, so plenty of strong students reach first-year calculus having only done Pre-Calculus 12. Students who took Alberta’s Math 31 often walk in with a head start on limits and derivatives. This is the single most common “why does everyone else already get this?” moment we hear about in September.
  • Trig and function fluency. First-year math and physics move fast through material that Pre-Calculus 12 covers. Any small gap from a mid-year transfer tends to surface here.
  • Chemistry problem-solving depth. The core content lines up well between provinces. But the speed and problem style in first-year chemistry can catch students who learned it in a different order.

None of these are dealbreakers. They are just predictable, which means a bit of targeted prep before or during first term will fix them.

BC vs Alberta curriculum: quick recap

  • BC splits Grade 11-12 math into Pre-Calculus (calculus-bound) and Foundations (non-calculus); Alberta does the same with “dash 1” and “dash 2.”
